Johanne Brousseau
Johanne has lived in North Bay for 60 years. She was raised by blue-collar parents who instilled strong work ethics, integrity, commitment and reliability. She has devoted over 50 years of community volunteerism, including 23 years of board experience. She had a 37-year career in the sewing industry as a patternmaker, business owner and national sewing educator. Since retiring in 2014, she has had the pleasure of serving on city council 2018-present. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, spending time with family, and taking advantage of all that North Bay offers.

Why are you running for this position?
I have been asked why am I running for Mayor? I got into this four year ago and over this time , I have seen the potential that our city has. It has motivated me to seize the opportunity and accept the challenge of leading our community. Based on what I have learned, along with my passion for our city, I want to step up, provide a new and fresh look at the helm of our council and work with all of our community to address the challenges we face as we continue to move forward together.
If you received a $1 million grant to use for your municipality any way you wanted, what would you do with it?
When elected, I would ensure that there is a corporate strategy in place that identifies our community priorities. In terms of capital projects in this day and age, $1 million dollars is not a lot. I would advocate identifying priority projects that are eligible for matching dollars from other levels of government in order to maximize the dollars available.
What do you think are the greatest challenges your municipality faces?
Our community's greatest challenges are mental health, addiction and homelessness. The ripple effect of these challenges adds external pressures to the community’s safety and well-being as a whole and to our front line.
Other than the official ways of communicating (minutes, municipal notes), how else will you reach out to your constituents to involve them in the decision making process?
I will engage the community and allow them to be involved in the decision-making process. I will invite citizens to participate in working groups/focus groups when a pertinent issue needs to be moved forward.
What is your favourite thing to do in your municipality?
I love to walk on our waterfront. I enjoy the 100km of multi-use trails that were greatly appreciated during our social distancing era. For the past few years, I've enjoyed raising funds for the local Y.M.C.A. With a group of avid swimmers, we swim in stages, along the contour of Trout Lake. We are e so lucky to have two pristine lakes in our city.
What does a ‘feminist city’ mean to you?
A feminist city would be a community where women would receive equal rights and their knowledge and experience would be respected When Women no longer have to fight for and point out the lack of equality then my city will be a feminist city.

Annelise Iacoe
Annelise Iacoe has been married Rico for over 41 years. She is a mother to two daughters named Annetta and Emilie. She is blessed with three grandchildren (Drew, Abby and Presley). She has been an educator for over 42 years. She retired as an elementary school principal seven years ago, but she continues to teach literacy to children in both English and French.

I want to be a trustee so I can be a strong voice for our community and help contribute to the education of our students at all levels.
What innovative projects would enhance life in your municipality?
I would like to see the revitalization of our waterfront. We live in such a beautiful part of Northern Ontario surrounded by our Great Lakes. We are also a border community with our American counterpart, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. This would not only enhance our tourism; it would also keep our young adults here to work and encourage others that are away from home back to Sault Ste. Marie.
If you received a $1 million grant to use for your municipality any way you wanted, what would you do with it?
I would bring small businesses to the Sault and attract more medical support and personnel to our community.
What do you think are the greatest challenges your municipality faces?
We face many challenges. Supports to assist the people in the community that have substance abuse, addictions, and mental health.
Other than the official ways of communicating (minutes, municipal notes), how else will you reach out to your constituents to involve them in the decision making process?
I would send out a monthly newsletter or as needed, as well as social media platforms.
What is your favourite thing to do in your municipality?
I love supporting local establishments. I also love visiting my family and grandchildren and giving them experiences at our local parks and beaches.
Why do you think it’s important for women to be represented in civic leadership, including on committees, boards and municipal councils?
I believe that equal opportunity is essential as well as inclusivity regardless of gender and race.
What does a ‘feminist city’ mean to you?
A feminist city is a city that supports all groups including both men and women.
Please identify the most critical policy, project, or initiative in your platform that addresses systemic barriers faced by women in your municipality, and describe why:
Teaching is historically a women-dominated profession and so I feel there are a few important initiatives here. One initiative: ensuring committees and negotiations have a strong female representation. Another initiative: considering the female voice in the schools. Are female youth represented on school council, in sports and clubs etc.? It would be interesting to do some evidence-based research in schools so that we can analyze the statistics to see how well we are doing in this area as a school board and develop next steps.

Tammy was raised in the beautiful community of Elliot Lake. She was a part of the first pride committee formed in Elliot Lake. She has a background in finance and management. She holds a first-level management degree from the Retail Council of Canada.

I plan on living in this City with my family for a long time and I continue to want to play an active role in making sure Elliot Lake is a great place for the children of our community as they grow. I want to drive a positive change in the community and be the voice they deserve.

At that specific moment, I would look at the highest need in the community.

Funding! We need to Government to sit up and take notice! Elliot Lake matters.

Our municipality boasts beautiful trails and lakes so utilizing those are amazing!

I believe time has evolved and woman are stepping up into roles that were not possible at one time. I think diversity important.
What does a ‘feminist city’ mean to you?
I don’t like the word feminist! I believe we need equal rights for everyone! We need to break the stigma of race, gender, sexuality and culture being a driving force to succeed.

We live and contribute equally to our community. I believe barriers are coming down in our society but we can always improve. We all have a voice and our voices deserve to be part of a solution. We need to work on all systemic barriers, discrimination whether it is gender base, religion base or culture base needs to end! This is something I stand firmly one.

Before retiring, Donica worked in education for 33 years in various roles; teacher, Vice Principal, Principal, Supervising Principal, and Special Education Officer. Her first years were spent working in outlying communities; the remainder were with Lakehead Public Schools. The experience in outlying communities supported her in developing an understanding of the educational needs of the Indigenous People. She has been part of many committees, for example, the Early Childhood Education Committee at Confederation College, a member of the Board Of Directors at Communities Together for Children and the Lakehead University Achievement Program Committee. She has two children who went through the Lakehead Public School System and Lakehead University and are now contributing to the healthcare workforce in Thunder Bay. Donica believes that with her diverse background in Education, she can be a strong voice for the community.

I am running for this position so that I can work with the community to be a positive voice for education.
What innovative projects would enhance life in your municipality?
Creating a forum for a diverse group of youth to co-create a plan for the future of our municipality. Identify the issues based on evidence, develop a plan and create actionable goals with an implementation plan. By involving the youth, you are building ownership and hope in the future and in our beautiful city.
If you received a $1 million grant to use for your municipality any way you wanted, what would you do with it?
This would take more than a million, but I would begin the plan mentioned in the last question and start the process to create more facilities to support drug addiction and mental health in our municipality. I would work with the other municipalities to co-facilitate such a plan.
What do you think are the greatest challenges your municipality faces?
Our community desperately requires services to support mental health and drug addiction. We need to work together as a community to educate constituents on these topics and also drug prevention programs for the youth and their families. We could be a hub for the region by providing a facility that supports more mental health options.
Other than the official ways of communicating (minutes, municipal notes), how else will you reach out to your constituents to involve them in the decision making process?
People of all ages are using technology to communicate and so I have tried to stay as techno-savvy as possible in order to keep up with the times! I would communicate through Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. I would also make sure constituents have various means to contact me so that I am accessible to support the community and those who may not be comfortable using technology or have access to technology. Holding Town Hall meetings in person or by zoom could also be a viable means of communication.
What is your favourite thing to do in your municipality?
I love hiking and Thunder Bay and the outlying areas have some of the most amazing places to hike!
Why do you think it’s important for women to be represented in civic leadership, including on committees, boards and municipal councils?
It is important for women to be presented on the School Board so there is a balance of gender representation. By having women as board members, we demonstrate that women have a voice in education and we act as role models for staff and students.
What does a ‘feminist city’ mean to you?
A 'feminist city' is a city where women are equally represented in all roles and get equal pay for equal work. Also, where womans' voices are heard and respected.

Since 2018, she has been working with Abbeyfield Canada to provide affordable housing for older adults. She is also the Co-Chair of the Compassionate City.

I care about my City and I want to make a change for the better of my community. I have the experience and knowledge to work with our city's residents. By connecting and meeting with residents, I understand the issues and will be working with members of council and the staff to meet the real needs of our residents. When taxpayers pay their taxes, they are investing in value for services. Taxpayers are expecting a return on their investment. They are investing in good roads, police services, fire protection, recreational service, and public transportation. I will ensure that hard-earned tax dollars are spent wisely and efficiently. What innovative projects would enhance life in your municipality?
I have developed a New Vision of Making Greater Sudbury Greater - United in Strength. What is required by the New Council is the creation of the new vision based on the principle of community collaboration, engagement, empowerment and accelerating community action. There is a strong need to create synergism through community development principles that recognize that citizens have the desire, ability and wherewithal to enter into collective problem-solving. If you received a $1 million grant to use for your municipality any way you wanted, what would you do with it?
When I was Ward 4 Councillor during 2006 to 2018, I initiated and worked with the fundraising committee to build a Therapeutic/Leisure Pool in Greater Sudbury. MP Marc Serre was able to get $1 Million from the Federal Government. We utilized this money to fund the Pool in Azilda. I firmly believe that the Mayor and Council must work closely with other levels of government to lobby for funds on special projects in Greater Sudbury.
What do you think are the greatest challenges your municipality faces?
I am meeting and connecting with many residents during my campaign to become Mayor of Greater Sudbury. Many challenges face the families in our City. From my communicating and connecting with the citizens, I have identified these 4 major challenges :
High taxes and the high cost of living;
Infrastructure renewal- the City of Greater Sudbury is looking at close to a three billion dollar infrastructure deficit;
Opioids, mental health and homelessness;
Urgent need for affordable housing for our citizens especially older adults.
Our focus must be on promoting smart government, smart growth and smart spending of taxpayers’ money on dealing with the needs prioritized by our residents.
Other than the official ways of communicating (minutes, municipal notes), how else will you reach out to your constituents to involve them in the decision making process?
I will be accessible any time, any day to meet with the residents, business and non-profit groups. We need to hold town meetings and Council meetings in every Ward of the City of Greater Sudbury. It is very important to connect with people. Trust and openness exits when we connect. then leadership becomes a gift and not a threat.
What is your favourite thing to do in your municipality?
I truly enjoy going to the many lakes in our city. I am the President of Café Heritage. I enjoy the many talents, the varied cultures and heritages of our people. This summer I attended the Summer Concerts hosted by Café Heritage at Whitewater lake. What a joy to connect with the residents and to enjoy the great talent of our local artists. I am looking forward to the Festival Noel hosted by Café Heritage in December 2022.

We need women to be involved in civic leadership. We bring a different and very valuable presence to the different committees, boards and municipal councils. Every person is unique and brings many talents when participating actively in our communities.

Too many prejudices and inequalities towards women exist in our communities. We need to be open, trusting, and caring to all persons. Rather than judge and see women as second-class residents, let's see their talents and contributions to making our communities greater and always working for the ultimate good of all.

She co-founded a women’s hand drum group years ago which is still going strong — so much so that recently, the group was asked to open for a live event in the city this past summer. She is a mother, grandmother, friend, ally, advocate & candidate. She has also run in federal and provincial elections.

I'm running for this position as I believe if elected, I can make a difference for those like me who feel they don't have a voice at the Big Boys Table. I'm a poverty, transit, homelessness, basic income advocate and ally.
What innovative projects would enhance life in your municipality?
If elected I would advocate for fare-free transit, one of the groups I'm with did a deputation years ago asking for this. I would like to see transit electrified, which would be a Win/Win for all community members who use the service. As we move towards a Zero Emissions Climate or at least try to reduce our carbon emissions over the next 10 years, this would be a step in the right direction for improving transit services for newcomers, students, low-income workers, those disabled, the elderly, those who are trying to be more climate-friendly for their future generations.
If you received a $1 million grant to use for your municipality any way you wanted, what would you do with it?
If I received a $1 Million grant to use within my community, I would advocate for more safe, affordable housing in my community as many struggle with the high cost of rent. Those on ODSP or OW (like me) have a hard time finding safe, affordable, adequate housing on the allowances we are given to survive monthly. Canada is not a 3rd world country. There is no reason any man, woman or child or Elder should be without housing much less food to eat on a daily basis. I would to see this infrastructure have the options of a community kitchen where community gardens nearby are planted & used for community meals. Which in turn would be a win/win for all. Residents would feel included, learn new skills, get volunteer skills, include & welcome others into their spaces & become more aware of how their impact on feeding others impacts us all.
What do you think are the greatest challenges your municipality faces?
While there are many issues, I think personally racism & discrimination are huge. Thunder Bay is a hub in NWO which has many challenges with being close to borders & other major cities. We need good, strong Leadership at all levels.

Grassroots levels, going to where they are, meeting with them, asking them the tough questions, what changes they would like to see?
